Rise of the Reds (also known as ROTR or RotR) is a modification for Command & Conquer: Generals - Zero Hour created by SWR Productions. It expands the game by adding a new side, the Russian Federation, and will also add the European Continental Army in a future release. Rise of the Reds will also bring back the nine alpha generals that were planned to be in the original Generals, but with a unique general assignment system. The European Continental Army was added after a merger with the Rise of Europe modification lead by General-Maddoc.

History

Initially hosted at Revora, the modification was taken over by some of its team members after they found the original leaders to be lacking in activity. The modification was then brought into the fold of SWR Productions and led by Comr4de, one of the original members. For a long time, the only released version was 1.0, an outdated version created prior to the SWR takeover. But on 27 December 2008 a completely revamped SWR-led version of the modification was released, dubbed 'SWR 1.0' to distinguish it from the original 1.0 release that was created by the previous team. SWR 1.0 overhauled the original design of the modification and featured many new additions and an overall higher standard of quality. On 6 June 2009, the modification was once again relocated when the SWR team left Fallout Studios.

Storyline

While the storyline has changed throughout the project's lifetime, it is currently placed in Africa in the late 2020s.

Most of the world powers have raced to obtain as much resources from the continent as they could, eventually sparking a devastating war pitting Russia, the European Union, the Global Liberation Army, China and the United States of America against one another. [1]

Features

ROTR includes a new array of units, some previously seen in the original game and some others implemented by the SWR team. New maps have been added to the game as well as a completely new storyline. The most striking change from Zero Hour in ROTR is the manner in which aircraft are treated. Air units such as jets and helicopters are especially powerful against dedicated ground units however they falter against anti-air units. Each faction has three tiers of anti-aircraft units, the bottom is made up of basic infantry like the Missile Defender and the Igla Trooper, along with vehicles such as Gattling Tanks or Avengers. The second tiered units are made up of very powerful anti-air units such as the Chaparral and the Grumble. The final, 3rd tier consists of fighter jets which are devastating against all aerial units.

With the reducing in value of a sold Command Center to $1 several strategies are significantly slower or more difficult. New strategies have been devised including the USA dual Air Field tactic, which takes advantage of the powerful Little Bird helicopter.

The future

ROTR 2.0 is expected to include over 100 new units, structures, abilities, sounds and generals' powers. But the most evident upcoming feature, aside from the European Union faction, will be the new generals for the original factions.

The process of selecting a general to play as has been changed from the original method. In Zero Hour you choose your general from the multiplayer/skirmish screen, with each general being a separate faction. However in ROTR you will only be able to select the side (country) you wish to play. Once in-game, players choose the general they wish to play as through their Command Center. Once the general has been assigned to the Command Center, the chosen general brings in his/her specific forces, making them available to the player. This allows players to choose their general whenever they wish, without revealing their expected playing style from the lobby.

Factions and generals

Rise of the Reds will bring back the original generals that were available in early versions of Generals. These generals never made it into the final game, but in RotR they will be playable. RotR will completely change the game's dynamics from what the player was used to in Zero Hour. Not only does this give the development team more freedom in design, but it will also allow players to choose from a larger variety of generals to complement their playing style.

The next release will contain the following factions and generals:

  • China
    • Red Army general
    • Special Weapons general
    • Secret Police general
  • Russia
    • Rapid Deployment general
    • Advanced Weapons general
    • Tactical Ballistics general

Each general will include units from Zero Hour with a mix of new units from ROTR. More information has not yet been released about these generals.
