Modern Warfare is a first person shooter and the fourth instalment in the Call of Duty series of games that brings the action up to date for the first time. In contrast to previous games in the series, Modern Warfare brought a Hollywood style plot and interlacing story lines to CoD fans. You take the place of both Sergeant Paul Jackson of the USMC 1st Force Recon and Sergeant 'Soap' MacTavish of the British 22nd SAS Regiment as you attempt to thwart a coup in a non-descript Middle Eastern country.

Gameplay

Unlike other games in the series, Modern Warfare takes place across several distinctly different arenas of combat and styles of combat. For example the Middle East, Pripiyat, Ukraine, a Chinese cargo vessel in the Bering Sea and from the gunnery seat of an AC-130 'Spectre' gunship.

Storyline

The story commences with your character, Sergeant Soap MacTavish, joining the British SAS at their training camp, where you are put through your paces on their assault course (to get used to the controls and assess your skill level). Immediately after completion of the course you are inserted onto a cargo vessel in the Bering Straight to investigate suspicious cargo. You discover a nuclear warhead and at the same moment the vessel is attacked by MiG fighters and begins to sink. After your escape you switch characters to become President Al-Fulani, held captive during a coup and are taken to be executed. Following this event and back as Soap, you attempt to rescue a Russian informant in the ultra nationalist faction who is being held captive. Once you have assisted loyal Russian forces retake a nationalist held village you rescue Nikolai and take off in a helicopter, only to be shot down and have to evade nationalist forces on foot. It is at this point that you change character again, taking control of the weaponry of an AC-130 'Spectre' gunship called in to assist in the evacuation of the S.A.S. and Nikolai. Once safe the action switches to the assault of the U.S. task force in the Middle East, playing as Sergeant Paul Jackson of the USMC 1st Force Recon as you attempt to reach the coup leader, Khaled Al-Asad. However, Al-Asad has fled and a nuclear warhead is detonated killing you and the invasion task force. In an attempt to discover what happened to the task force in the Middle East, Soap and the S.A.S. have intelligence that takes them to the Ukraine to locate Al-Asad. Once captured he reveals that, in-fact, Imran Zakhaev that has masterminded the coup and detonated the warhead. Capt. Price, the unit leader of the S.A.S. then recalls his last encounter with Zakhaev, wherein you take control of Capt. Price in 1996 at Pripiyat, Ukraine, where you are tasked with assassinating him. However, the attempt fails, merely wounding him, leaving him with a missing arm. Back in the present day you return as Soap and attempt to capture Zakhaevs son, who, when finally cornered, kills himself. In the final act of the campaign you join up with American forces to retake a captured Russian Nuclear missile silo, only to find that Zahkaev has launched two nuclear warheads at the U.S. After managing to reach the control room and disarming the missiles in flight you must then escape from the nationalist forces and are finally brought to halt on a bridge and your squad are all injured one by one when Zahkaev finally arrives. Luckily loyalist Russian forces arrive to distract a heavily injured Soap enabling you to dispatch Zahkaev and his guards. However all of your S.A.S unit are dead and Capt. Price appears to be dying.

Modern Warfare on Fallout Studios

Several members of the community conduct regular LAN games and almost all have successfully achieved the highest rankings possible for multiplayer play. These games have been the source of much amusement and have given rise to the rather frustrating creation of the Chyrorist attack. Spawned from the suicidal charge of Chyros whilst holding a 'cooked' grenade. Also, Amdrial has become famous for his Flashbang-whoring antics whereby he cannot move 20ft without throwing one. Although the games have not achieved the levels of popularity amongst the community in the same way as Team Fortress 2 or Left 4 Dead, Modern Warfare is still a large part of the communities gaming activities.
