2018-2021: Saiphans invade the Empire, the domain of a warrior race on their borders, after they are provoked by Imperial raiding parties. Imperial forces are slaughtered, and the Empire unconditionally surrenders contested territory to the Saiphans in exchange for not being absorbed. Saiphans agree as they feel absorbing and pacifying the Empire would be more trouble than it's worth, and Imperials are at best an annoying, backwards, and brutish race best kept at arm's length. Imperial subjects on surrendered worlds are systematically exterminated.
2376: Saiphan scouts detect Terran activity 56 light years from their border.
2378: Observation of Terrans begins in earnest.
2380: Starbase 107 completed in Omicron Gruis system. Closest approach to Saiphan territory yet; 38 light years from closest Saiphan deep space listening post.
2386: Saiphan scouts abduct dead crew of a freighter who were killed in a pirate raid on the Rim. Fortunately for us, they only found their escape pods, so no computer database raid was made at this point. Saiphan government enters a brief state of panic when it's discovered the Human Genome is almost an exact match with the Nomads spoken of by Monocerans millennia ago.
2392: Tau1 Gruis Federal Colony founded. Replaces Starbase 107 as closest approach to Saiphan territory. Saiphans become further concerned, as this particular star has an archaic, undecipherable mention in a Monoceran database.
2405: Saiphans begin pulling outposts away from Terran space as a CFS scoutship passes through a system only 7 light years from nearest listening outpost. The last thing they want is to be detected before they are ready, if Terrans are anywhere near as deadly as the Nomads.
2425: Interstellar War begins. Saiphans do an about face and ignore Terrans, expecting war to take decades or even centuries like those they've observed among other races, particularly the Imperials.
2432: Allied Worlds of Sol & the Core defeats Tri-Axis Powers. Aurora carpet-nuked, Eridanusian Planetary Republic and Asiatic Alliance surrender, and the Tri-Axis sympathetic Singularity movement flees to the Rim. Interstellar War ends. Saiphans renew observations, realizing their prediction data on Terrans must have been way off.
2437: Decision is made to wipe out Terrans before they become a threat. Saiphan scoutship attacks Tau1 Gruis colony. Easily defeats Terrans in space, but is forced down as a doomed Terran frigate rams and disables them on its way into the atmosphere. They continue the fight on the ground and eventually defeat the colony and its garrison. The victory is short-lived as Saiphan forces are vaporized when fleeing Terrans detonate atmosphere processor network, scorching much of the northwestern eighth of the planet. Saiphan war fleet arrives shortly thereafter and wipes planet clean of all remaining sentient life with concentrated plasma bombardment and antimatter bombs.
2440s: Terrans make no provoking moves the initial few months and enter a mass reorganization of their forces. Saiphans press inward and begin ravaging shipping lanes and outlying colonies. A decision is made to locate the Terran command and control nexus, the so-called "Core Systems," and destroy the worlds there, just like what defeated the Monocerans. The Terran control entity, the AWSC, declares war.
