Defense Conglomerates

The Boeing Company

The first and foremost of the four hundred year-old Big Three defense conglomerates, Boeing is currently the largest manufacturer of civilian aircraft and sub-capital ship spacecraft, the second largest defense contractor in existence, and the second largest producer of propulsion systems. It has vied with Lockheed for the position of the largest defense contractor since the early 21st century, and every so often the two of them go on buying sprees in attempt to outdo the other. Despite this, Boeing and Lockheed together own 50/50 stakes in the United Superluminous Alliance company, which produces some 65% of FTL drives, with the remainder spread out of a wide variety of companies. Boeing is headquarted in the USA on Earth.

Kerella Defense Industries

KDI is currently largest company based entirely outside of Sol. It is in direct competition with Aerostar Interstellar and Ceti Spaceworks for production of most of the AWSC's large scale warships, and after purchasing the starbase division of RSC Energia, is currently the sole developer and manufacturer of large fixed-in-space space structures such as stardocks, starbases, and toruses. They are also by far the largest manufacturer of the fusion rockets that power modern interstellar transportation. KDI is headquartered in the Republic of Kerella.

Lockheed Corporation

The second of the four hundred year-old Big Three defense conglomerates, the largest defense contractor in existence, and the most profitable by a wide margin. Like the other two, it is cobbled together from countless acquisitions of other contractors spanning four centuries. Lockheed is the largest manufacturer of manned and unmanned military spacecraft and aircraft, and maintains a significant presence in the capital ship construction business. Of particular note is the fact that Boeing and Lockheed together own 50/50 stakes in the United Superluminous Alliance company, which produces some 65% of FTL drives, with the remainder spread out of a wide variety of companies. Unsurprisingly, Lockheed's capital ship construction business uses FTL drives exclusively from United. Lockheed is headquartered in the USA on Earth.

Rocket & Space Corporation Energia

The third of the four hundred year-old Big Three defense conglomerates. After purchasing EADS and Thales and substantially upgrading its operations following closer economic ties opening between Russia and Europe, the company that began as a Soviet research firm has emerged as the Federation's largest defense contractor, and number five behind Lockheed, Boeing, Ceti Spaceworks, and KDI. Following significant investment from the Eridanusian Planetary Republic, RSC Energia continued expanding up until the Interstellar War, which was disastrous for the company. With Tri-Axis government contracts making up 40% of its revenue, it found itself stripped of income, and only staved off bankruptcy by selling off its starbase division to KDI and accepting a bailout from the Federation government. Today, the company is starting to get back on its feet and regain market share through expanded civilian operations. RSC Energia is headquartered in Russia on Earth, with a secondary headquarters on the Europa.

Aerostar Interstellar

Cobbled together over time from General Dynamics, Rockwell International, Union Aerospace, General Motors, Honeywell, VentureStar Launch Services, and several smaller firms, Aerostar is a massive conglomerate and likely the one with the widest breadth of operations, making everything from nuclear reactors in starships and the ubiquitous Stingray fighter to commuter cars and home air and heat systems. Aerostar is often accused of being a runaway horizontal monopoly, the level of corporate espionage in which it engages is troubling, and charges have even been leveled against it over possible war profiteering; however, their significant importance Mars' economy has prevented a break-up or overly costly penalties so far for fear of causing catastrophic effects for Martians. Critics claim their operations are entangled in the Martian economy to such a degree for exactly that reason. Aerostar is headquarted in the Mars Federal Colony.

Ceti Spaceworks

Ceti Spaceworks is currently the largest manufacturer of large starships in existence, owing largely to the presence of unfathomable quantities of easily tapped asteroid ore in the Tau Ceti system. Ceti Spaceworks enjoyed massive expansion of its operations due to the Interstellar War and the fact that their space-based operations in Tau Ceti remained largely untouched despite the war going on on Janus' surface. Ceti's most recent claim to fame was defeating KDI and Aerostar in bids for the Coalition Fleet's BB(X) next generation battleship contract, though Aerostar divisions did end up as a subcontractors on the BB(X). As is well-known, the BB(X) developed into the famed Razorback-class battleship.

Other Organizations

Pavo Tech Union

The Pavo Tech Union is a unique and strange development in the history of capitalism. The PTU owns the entire Delta Pavonis system outright, is directly funded and supported by the CFS, ROK, and UP, and 40% of defense contractors and up to 60% of the leading technology companies are at the very least observing members of the PTU. While it certainly has no shortage of critics, the number of significant technological leaps and outright paradigm shifts to come out of the PTU's pooling of minds and resources is undeniable, not the least of which is the enormous habitable ring in the Alpha Centauri system, the construction of which is unthinkable even today, yet it exists and was built just the same.

United Terraformers

70% or more of all terraforming work since the 2200s has been performed by United Terraformers. United Terraformers thus enjoys a virtual monopoly on the business; however, unlike many other monopolies, which are coming under intense scrutiny since the War's end, the United Terraformers monopoly is government-sanctioned. Despite decreased competition, United Terraformers has advanced terraforming technology at a breakneck pace, and its synergy with Colonial Administration is largely responsible for the wildfire expansion to the stars that continues to accelerate. United Terraformers is also credited with developing the Rapid Roy (Rapid-ROI, or return on investment) business model that has transformed terraforming from a money hole undertaken over long periods only by multinational government efforts solely in the name of expansion to a relatively quick, profit-generating enterprise. United Terraformers is not the only name in the business, however, and lower cost firms are starting to assault their business with terraforming operations in the Minor Colonies and on the Rim.

Eberhard-Brückland

A major shipping and mining company. Contracts with the Colonial Administration and United Terraformers to scout beyond the Rim for planets suitable for colonization, on the condition that major mining finds have rights awarded directly to Eberhard-Brückland. The relationship between Eberhard-Brückland and Aerostar is particularly hostile, as Aerostar illegally used their monopoly to temporarily derail Eberhard-Brückland's exploration efforts by refusing to sell any more scoutships to them except at grossly inflated prices; the reason likely being Aerostar's favoritism toward one of its own divisions, which also functions in exploration.
